Vancouver Coastal Health is planning to redevelop the former Capilano Care Centre in West Vancouver into a new long-term care facility. The health authority is now inviting qualified contractors to explore options to increase long-term care capacity at the site.
The Capilano Care Centre, located at 525 Clyde Avenue, has been closed since 2022. Vancouver Coastal Health’s recent notice states the new facility will have at least 210 long-term care beds. This signals a significant investment in local senior care infrastructure.
Previously, the 205-bed Capilano Care Centre was managed by the private company Revera. Built in 1973, the facility was considered outdated and costly to upgrade. In 2021, Revera decided the building was too old and inefficient to renovate to modern standards.
The old care home featured ward-style rooms and an aging design that no longer met residents’ needs or modern care requirements. Revera stated, “Capilano is simply too old to attempt to renovate.” The company emphasized the need for a new, improved facility that can handle more complex care demands.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Capilano Care Centre experienced severe outbreaks due to inadequate infection control measures. It was one of the hardest-hit locations on the North Shore, with many seniors tragically losing their lives.
The planned redevelopment aims to address these past issues. The new long-term care home will follow modern safety and design standards, ensuring better living conditions and infection control for residents.
This redevelopment plan aligns with growing needs in West Vancouver for expanded and improved senior care services. Vancouver Coastal Health’s call for contractors marks the first step toward building a safer, larger, and more modern facility.
