A Colwood graduate is set to pursue her academic dreams with the help of a $50,000 scholarship designed for youth who have faced challenges while excelling in school.
Avery Fagan, a recent graduate of Royal Bay Secondary, received this significant post-secondary award from The Cmolik Foundation. The foundation’s selection committee praised Avery’s application, her clear academic goals, and her future career plans.
Starting this September, Avery will attend the University of Victoria to study psychology.
Bruce McElroy, one of Avery’s teachers, shared high praise for her. He said Avery has excelled in her studies by taking college-level courses offered at the high school. He noted her strong work ethic and perseverance, which have helped her succeed inside and outside the classroom.
The Cmolik Foundation began in 2008 with a mission to support young people in British Columbia who have overcome hardship. Today, around 100 students across B.C. benefit from the foundation’s scholarship program.
The foundation believes education can change lives. Along with financial support, students receive mentorship and join a community of peers and past scholarship recipients. They also gain access to special events and professional opportunities that help them succeed in post-secondary education and beyond.
Avery’s story highlights how scholarships like this can open doors for students who face tough obstacles but remain determined to reach their goals.
