A pedestrian suffered serious injuries after being struck by a driver at a busy Esquimalt intersection on Thursday morning. West Shore RCMP reported the collision, which occurred at the junction of Admirals and Maplebank roads around 10:30 a.m., near the border of Esquimalt and Songhees Nation land.
Police said the vehicle involved was a white GMC Savana van. Officers requested a traffic reconstructionist to investigate the incident due to its severity. The pedestrian was taken to hospital, while the driver stayed on site to cooperate with authorities.
West Shore RCMP is asking anyone with dashcam footage from the area between 10:15 a.m. and 10:40 a.m. to review their recordings. Those who may have captured the collision are encouraged to contact police at 250-474-2264.
BC Emergency Health Services confirmed that two ambulances, staffed with primary care and advanced care paramedics, responded to the scene. Paramedics provided emergency treatment before transporting the patient to hospital in serious condition.
This intersection has a history of traffic incidents. ICBC crash data shows eight collisions occurred here between 2020 and 2024. Constable Nancy Saggar, a media officer with West Shore RCMP, highlighted the high number of crashes in the area, noting that August 12 alone saw nine collisions reported in a single day.
“Typically, we see two to four collisions reported in a 24-hour period,” Saggar said. “The spike in accidents is unusual and reminds drivers to stay alert and follow traffic rules.”
Saggar added that not all accidents are caused by driver error. External factors can play a role, but remaining aware and cautious significantly improves road safety. Drivers are encouraged to reduce speed, pay attention to surrounding vehicles, and follow road regulations to prevent accidents.
Police also advised the public to report erratic or dangerous driving. “If you see unsafe driving or suspect impairment, find a safe place to pull over and call the police,” Saggar said. “Awareness can save lives.”
Authorities continue to investigate the Esquimalt intersection crash. They stress the importance of vigilance on the road, particularly at locations with a history of collisions.
