A senior Yorkie mix rescue in West Kelowna is capturing hearts after a nine-year-old dog named Tessa was given a new chance at life. The Yorkshire terrier mix was surrendered in July following an animal protection investigation. Today, she is slowly healing from years of neglect and medical challenges.

Tessa’s story began in difficult circumstances. She was found living in poor conditions with several other animals. Investigators discovered that she had endured a hard life, raising at least five litters of puppies while struggling with untreated health issues.

Veterinary exams revealed the extent of her suffering. She had broken and missing teeth, untreated skin problems, and fecal matter matted into her coat. On top of that, she suffered from luxating patellas, a painful condition where the kneecap shifts out of place. Tessa was also severely under-socialized, making her fearful of human contact.

Despite her past, her recovery journey began once she was brought into care. She was spayed to prevent further health complications and underwent dental surgery to address her broken teeth. These first steps provided much-needed relief and set the stage for her emotional healing.

According to caregivers, Tessa’s transformation was swift once she realized she was safe. Her initial fear gave way to affection. She soon became known as a gentle lap dog who craved comfort and connection. This shift in behavior showed how quickly neglected animals can change with patience, medical support, and kindness.

However, Tessa’s road to recovery was not without setbacks. Shortly after settling into her foster home, she became ill once again. Tests confirmed she had pancreatitis, a serious and painful condition that affects the digestive system. Treatment required several rounds of medication and even an extended stay at an emergency veterinary hospital.

Thanks to dedicated care, Tessa has pulled through. Today, she continues her healing process in the safe environment of her foster home. Her energy is slowly returning, and her resilience is shining through. Caregivers say she enjoys soft blankets, gentle cuddles, and the warmth of human companionship that was missing in her early years.

Tessa’s journey reflects both the struggles and the triumphs of animal rescue work. Cases like hers highlight why investigations into poor living conditions are so important. For animals that cannot speak for themselves, intervention can mean the difference between continued suffering and the chance to thrive.

Animal welfare teams stress that older dogs like Tessa deserve just as much care and attention as younger pets. Senior rescues often face unique health challenges, but with proper medical treatment and nurturing, they can lead fulfilling lives. Tessa is living proof of how age should never be a barrier to love or adoption.

Her foster caregivers are hopeful that once she has fully recovered, she will find a permanent home with a family who appreciates her gentle spirit. For potential adopters, Tessa offers the perfect reminder that adopting a senior dog comes with rewards. Mature pets are often calmer, affectionate, and eager to bond with people who provide security and love.

The senior Yorkie mix rescue story in West Kelowna is a reminder of the importance of community support in animal welfare. Donations, fostering, and adoptions all play a vital role in ensuring animals like Tessa receive the second chances they deserve. Her case also underlines the power of compassion in transforming lives—both for the pets who need it and for the people who welcome them.

Tessa’s tale is not just about survival. It is about resilience, healing, and the hope that comes with a fresh start. Her journey from neglect to care shows that with time and kindness, even the most vulnerable animals can rediscover joy. Soon, she will be ready for adoption, bringing the promise of a brighter future with a loving family.
