A brand-new multi-sport box will officially open in Saanichton’s Centennial Park on Tuesday, September 2. The $4.9-million facility promises to bring a fresh wave of energy to local recreation and will serve as a year-round hub for sports and community gatherings across the Saanich Peninsula.
This all-weather structure replaces the old lacrosse box, which had been in place since 1971. The new covered space spans 17,000 square feet and is packed with modern features. These include an acrylic-coated playing surface, electronic scoreboard, shot clocks, lighting, team benches, and dasher boards surrounded by chain-link fencing.
The aim of the new space is to offer more than just traditional lacrosse. The multi-sport box is designed for flexibility and accessibility, making it perfect for sports like ball hockey, soccer, pickleball, and even dryland training.
Local officials are celebrating the project as a major win for the community. Niall Paltiel, Chair of the Peninsula Recreation Commission, said the new facility marks a key milestone in improving local recreational options. He emphasized that it will create space for outdoor activity throughout the year, no matter the weather.
Planning for the upgraded box began several years ago. In June 2022, the District of Central Saanich handed over the construction responsibilities to the Peninsula Recreation Commission. From that point, the project moved quickly.
A large portion of the funding came from a $2-million grant provided by the federal government’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The rest of the budget was covered through the Capital Regional District’s Capital Plan.
The new multi-sport box reflects the region’s commitment to creating inclusive and sustainable recreation facilities. Its design supports people of all ages and skill levels. Whether someone is practicing for a competitive league or enjoying a casual game with friends, the space welcomes everyone.
