The City of Abbotsford is moving forward with upgrades to Mill Lake Park. On Tuesday, July 22, city council approved $1 million to start the first phase of the work. The upgrades will begin right away and are expected to finish by summer 2026.
The project includes replacing and widening three sections of the lake loop trail. It also includes putting in underground cables and bases for future pathway lights. The money for this work will come from the city’s community works fund.
This is part of a larger plan called the Mill Lake Master Plan. The plan will guide improvements at the park over the next 20 years. Work on the plan began in 2021. In 2023, the city shared three design ideas, some of which included removing the outdoor pool and boardwalk. But after public feedback, the city decided to keep both.
Before giving final approval, the city asked residents for more input. A survey showed that 62% of people liked the final plan, 20% did not, and 18% were neutral. Only one council member, Simon Gibson, voted against the plan. He supported most of it but disagreed with building a covered stage, an amphitheatre, and an arts and culture building. He said those buildings would harm the natural feel of the park.
Other council members supported the plan. Mark Warkentin said the plan may not be perfect, but it is a strong guide for the city. Dave Sidhu asked about the cost of the trail project. City staff explained that the work is large and includes removing old paths, leveling the ground, installing safety fences, and adding plants after the work is done. They will also lay down temporary mats so people can still use the trail while construction is happening.
In total, the city plans to spend $26.5 million on the park over the next four years. That includes $4.5 million in 2026, $7 million in 2027, $9 million in 2028, and $6 million in 2029.
