Construction has started on the new BC Cancer Centre Kamloops, bringing improved cancer care to the Thompson-Cariboo-Shuswap region. The centre will be located at the Westlands site beside Royal Inland Hospital. This project is the largest health investment ever made in Kamloops, with a cost of about $386 million funded by the province and the Thompson Regional Hospital District.

EllisDon Corporation leads the construction, which is set to finish in 2028. The centre will serve about 1,200 patients each year, providing up to 16,500 cancer treatments and 7,500 radiation consults and follow-ups annually. This will help patients get care closer to home and reduce travel times.

The new facility will feature radiation therapy planning, including a CT simulator, diagnostic MRI, an outpatient cancer care unit with exam and consult rooms, a sacred space for patients and staff, offices for healthcare workers, and a 470-stall parking garage. The project also includes upgrades to Royal Inland Hospital’s oncology clinic and pharmacy.

BC Cancer and Interior Health will operate the centre together. This new centre is part of B.C.’s 10-Year Cancer Action Plan, which focuses on improving cancer prevention, detection, and treatment across the province.

Local communities will benefit from better access to cancer care, which can improve treatment success and reduce stress for patients. The BC Cancer Centre Kamloops will be a vital resource for the region, offering advanced services in a patient-focused setting.

Construction progress will be closely monitored to ensure the centre opens on schedule. By 2028, Kamloops will have a modern cancer treatment facility that meets growing regional needs.
