Four new wildfires on Vancouver Island were discovered after a weekend storm brought heavy lightning across the region. The fires remain small in size but have all been classified as out of control. The most significant blaze is the Dunsmuir Creek wildfire, located southwest of Nanaimo near Green Mountain. It was discovered on Sunday afternoon and is currently estimated at 0.1 hectares. Officials with the BC Wildfire Service believe lightning sparked the blaze, which continues to burn under close watch. Three more fires were detected earlier on Sunday morning in Strathcona Provincial Park, about 45 kilometres southwest of Campbell River.…
A wildfire near Port Alberni, British Columbia, has been downgraded, leaving the province without any significant active fires. The Mount Underwood wildfire, which prompted evacuations and a local state of emergency last week, lost its fire-of-note classification on Thursday. Officials said the fire is no longer “especially visible” or a threat to public safety after receiving 40 millimetres of rain over the past week. The B.C. Wildfire Service announced the fire was being held a day earlier, meaning it was not expected to expand beyond its current size of 35 square kilometres. The last time the province had no fires…

The wildfire near Cameron Lake on Vancouver Island has grown to 538 hectares. This update came at 3 p.m. on August 6. The fire, known as the Wesley Ridge wildfire, remains active and dangerous. Although light rain fell over the area, it was not enough to stop the fire’s spread. The ground is still dry, with lots of flammable material. Cliff Chapman, the wildfire operations director, explained that the rainfall only helped in a very small way. “It gives us a short window to act directly on the fire,” said Chapman. “We’re working close to the fire’s edge to stop…
Firefighters on Vancouver Island are making steady progress in containing the Wesley Ridge wildfire, which has shown minimal growth overnight. The blaze, burning on the north side of Cameron Lake, remains at 511 hectares in size. According to fire information officer Madison Dahl, the calm weather and lower temperatures are helping crews on the ground. She said they are using these improved conditions to act directly against the fire. Dahl noted that firefighters encountered mostly smouldering ground fire without visible flames during the night shift. There is hope that light rain may fall soon, but officials warn that the region…
Wildfire smoke and rain are expected in Metro Vancouver weather as August begins. Temperatures will drop slightly before warming up again by the weekend. BC Day, on Monday, August 4, will bring cloudy skies and average temperatures. Meteorologist Yimei Li says the day will look like Sunday. It may start cloudy, but the sun could come out later. However, the sun will look hazy because of wildfire smoke drifting in from Washington. Wildfires just south of the border are sending smoke north. The air may smell smoky, but no official warning is expected. The smoke won’t be thick enough to…
