Residents in Richmond are growing more frustrated with how their city is being run. Many now believe real change is needed in both city leadership and management. Their concerns have been building for years, but recent events have made the problems more obvious. One major concern is the role of the mayor. Many people believe he spends too much time attending outside meetings instead of focusing on Richmond. While these meetings are part of regional planning, residents wonder why so much time is spent away from the city. With a full public salary, people expect full attention to local matters.…
Who keeps fire hydrants in Richmond bright, clean, and ready for emergencies? Each summer, student workers are hired to repaint around 1,000 of Richmond’s 5,000 hydrants. These young painters play a key role in keeping the city safe and its streets looking clean. Carter Ackerman and Paige Sever are among the students helping with the painting this year. Then they scrub off old paint and rust using wire brushes. This…

The work is being done as part of an infrastructure upgrade led by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Officials say this project is necessary to replace a damaged drainage pipe under the roadway. The existing pipe has aged and no longer meets current safety and performance standards. Replacing it…
Richmond’s community gardens are thriving, showing how local efforts can create green, healthy spaces for everyone. These gardens, spread across 17 public locations in the city, offer many benefits. They bring fresh air, exercise, social time, and homegrown vegetables and flowers to residents. The gardens are all on public land managed by Richmond’s Park Services Department. The city works closely with a local nonprofit group called Urban Bounty to run the program smoothly. Urban Bounty plays a big role. They build raised garden beds, set up water supplies, provide soil, manage garden memberships, and help keep the gardens in good…
