A rare piece of real estate is on the market on Cortes Island, and it comes with a surprising price tag. The five-storey Wolf Bluff Castle, complete with three turrets, a medieval-style dining hall, and even a dungeon, is selling for $440,000 — less than many standard homes in Campbell River.
The castle sits at 1416 Manzanita Road and overlooks Cortes Bay. Built by local resident Karl Triller in 1990, the structure was inspired by his childhood memories. According to realtor Roman Krzaczek, who is handling the sale, Triller wanted to create a place that reflected the wonder and fantasy he had imagined as a child.
Triller passed away recently, and his son decided to list the property last year. Krzaczek said the unique story behind the project drew him to take on the listing. He explained that Triller’s life was as unusual as his architectural vision.
Born in Hungary, Triller grew up in a poor household with seven siblings. Locals recall him wearing a crown and calling himself the “king of the castle.” He often invited members of the community to join celebrations at the property, making the castle a well-known landmark on the island.
The castle’s bold design and size make it one of the most unusual properties in the region. However, it is also unfinished and in need of major work. Krzaczek said this is likely why the sale is taking longer than expected, despite the attractive price.
From the outside, the castle still looks solid. Its concrete walls and exterior features remain intact. But the interior may need extensive renovations. “It needs a builder to assess whether the wood can be salvaged or if it needs to be replaced entirely,” Krzaczek explained.
The property is valued by B.C. Assessment at $758,000, significantly more than the asking price. In addition to the castle, the sale includes a one-storey house with an unfinished basement and workshop. The extra building could serve as a temporary residence while the castle is restored.
For potential buyers, the opportunity is both unusual and challenging. While the setting offers ocean views and the charm of island life, the property will require a substantial investment of time and money to complete. Still, the idea of owning a real castle — and one with such a personal and colorful history — could appeal to someone with vision and resources.
The Wolf Bluff Castle is not just a piece of real estate; it’s a story in stone. Built over decades, it represents one man’s dream of creating a medieval retreat on the edge of the Pacific. Whoever takes on the project will inherit not only the building but also its place in the local community’s memory.
Krzaczek said that while there have been inquiries, the right buyer has yet to come forward. The property awaits someone who sees beyond the repairs to the possibilities. For a fraction of the price of many modern homes, this castle offers a rare chance to own a landmark — and perhaps become the next “king” or “queen” of Cortes Island.
