Harrison Ford has praised Michael J. Fox’s presence on the set of “Shrinking” Season 3, calling it “essential” for his portrayal of a character living with Parkinson’s disease. Ford, who stars in the AppleTV+ series, credits Fox for helping him understand and embody the challenges of the disease more deeply.

Ford’s character, Paul, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in the first season. The upcoming third season shows Paul facing the progression of the illness. Fox, who has lived with Parkinson’s since 1991, joined the cast to support the storyline. Ford told Variety that Fox offers a “physical representation” of the disease and helps him believe his character can handle the challenge.

Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s disease at 29. Since then, he founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which funds research to find better treatments and a cure. Ford said Fox’s courage and strength are inspiring. “He’s very smart, brave, noble, generous, and passionate,” Ford said. “His grace is on full display. It’s amazing to have that example, whether we have Parkinson’s or not.”

Ford received his first Emmy nomination this year for his role in “Shrinking.” He takes the responsibility of portraying Parkinson’s seriously. “We can’t be messing around with this to make a joke. Parkinson’s is not funny,” Ford said. “We need to be accurate and respectful in how we show this challenge. It’s not for entertainment value.”

“Shrinking” follows Jimmy, played by Jason Segel, a therapist who uses unusual methods to help his clients after his wife’s death. Jessica Williams also stars in the series. Paul’s Parkinson’s becomes a key story in the third season, exploring his physical decline and the emotional struggle it brings.

Ford added that Paul faces an uncertain future but finds support in his relationship with a character played by Wendie Malick. “He knows he’s in decline and faces harder times ahead,” Ford said. “But he’s not alone.”

Season 3 of “Shrinking” will be available to stream on AppleTV+ this fall.
