A crash on Highway 1 in Chilliwack caused major delays Thursday morning, temporarily closing eastbound lanes near Prest Road.

According to traffic reports, a semi-truck hit the cable barriers in the center median around 6:30 a.m., leaving the barriers and oil spread across both eastbound lanes. Drivers were forced to exit the highway, creating significant congestion in the area.

Authorities quickly responded to the scene, and the eastbound lanes have since reopened. Drivers are still advised to expect slow traffic due to residual congestion.

Later Thursday, another crash occurred on the westbound lanes of Highway 1, west of Lickman Road. At least one person was transported to a local hospital with injuries. Details about the cause of this second incident have not yet been released.

Officials are urging motorists to remain cautious when driving through Chilliwack and to follow traffic updates as crews continue clearing debris and managing traffic flow.

Highway 1 is a key route in the region, and crashes like these can quickly affect commuting and travel times. Drivers are advised to plan alternate routes where possible and allow extra time for travel.

Emergency responders and maintenance crews have been working to ensure the highway is safe. Cleaning crews are removing oil and repairing the damaged median barriers, which will help prevent further accidents in the area.

Local authorities continue to monitor traffic conditions and provide real-time updates for commuters. Drivers are reminded to maintain safe speeds, especially near areas where accidents have recently occurred.

The incidents highlight the importance of highway safety and careful driving, particularly in busy areas of Chilliwack. Authorities encourage drivers to stay alert and follow road safety guidelines to prevent additional crashes.
