A truck driver from Mission was caught speeding and driving under the influence on Highway 1 near Chilliwack. His vehicle was impounded, and he faced fines totaling more than $500. The 34-year-old driver was stopped by police on July 26 around 1 a.m. after he was recorded driving 117 km/h in a 100 km/h zone near Yale Road West. Officers noticed signs of impairment and confirmed it with a breathalyzer test.
Cpl. Michael McLaughlin from BC Highway Patrol said that thousands of truck drivers work safely every day, but authorities remain alert for those who break the law. This driver failed a breath test and showed clear signs of impairment. In addition to the impaired driving, safety checks revealed problems with both the tractor and trailer. The driver was fined $138 for speeding, and an additional $368 for not having a speed limiter set, which is required on heavy commercial vehicles.
He was also issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition that banned him from driving, and his tractor was impounded for 30 days. The driver was responsible for heavy-duty towing fees, and the licensing for both the tractor and trailer was suspended until all vehicle defects were repaired. The BC Highway Patrol continues its Summer Impaired Driving campaign, running through the end of August. Officials remind all drivers, especially professional drivers, to avoid impaired driving and prioritize safety on the roads.
