Colwood came alive as past, present, and future merged during its Canada Day Colwood Celebration. Hundreds of visitors gathered at Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites to enjoy a day filled with family-friendly activities, history, and festive moments.
The celebrations offered a mix of entertainment for all ages. Children ran across sunny lawns chasing giant bubbles, while historic weapon demonstrations showcased the site’s rich past. Guests explored the historic grounds, enjoying live performances from the Band of the 5th (BC) Field Artillery Regiment, while Legion volunteers served hot dogs and burgers with military-like precision.
At noon, a 21-gun salute echoed across the historic site, marking a highlight of the day and reminding visitors of Canada’s deep-rooted history.
For the Barboza family, who have lived in Colwood for four years, this Canada Day held extra meaning. Shortly after welcoming relatives from Brazil for a month-long visit, they brought them to Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse for their first excursion.
“Canada Day represents freedom, family, community, and a chance to understand the country’s history,” the family shared. They enjoyed exploring the grounds together, appreciating both the historic displays and the lively atmosphere.
Along the coastline, visitors tried to capture the perfect photo with the giant Canadian flag draped across the 164-year-old Fisgard Lighthouse. Strong winds added a playful challenge to the task, creating laughter and memorable moments for everyone.
Some attendees came prepared to show their Canadian pride. Susan Rene, for example, brought her own flags and sported two maple leafs on her head, adding her personal touch to the celebration.
The event also featured popular attractions for younger visitors. One highlight was “That Bubble Guy,” who delighted children with massive bubbles that floated across the sunlit lawns, creating joyful reactions and plenty of photo opportunities.
The Canada Day Colwood Celebration successfully combined tradition with entertainment. Visitors enjoyed historical demonstrations, live music, and interactive family fun. The combination of past and present allowed everyone—from local families to international guests—to engage with Canada’s heritage while celebrating in a lively, inclusive setting.
Organizers ensured the event had something for every age group. From educational displays and historical exhibits to playful activities for children, the day balanced learning and leisure. Guests could witness the artillery regiment in action, explore historical buildings, and experience the sights and sounds that have shaped Canada over the decades.
Many families made the event a multigenerational experience. Three generations of the Barboza family were seen enjoying the festivities together, highlighting how Canada Day serves as both a celebration of national pride and a bonding moment for families.
As the sun set on the Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse grounds, the event left a lasting impression. Visitors departed with a deeper appreciation of Canada’s history, the joy of community engagement, and memories of a day filled with fun, music, and celebration.
The Canada Day Colwood Celebration continues to stand out as a festive event that honors Canada’s history while embracing modern family-friendly activities. It offers an inclusive environment where visitors can celebrate national pride, enjoy cultural expressions, and create lasting memories with family and friends.
