Courtenay cheese from Natural Pastures Cheese Company has been recalled due to possible Listeria contamination. The recall involves the Mount Becher Buffalo Medium Cheese, batch number 854 179. This action follows test results from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), although no illnesses have been reported so far.

The CFIA warns consumers not to eat, serve, sell, or share the recalled cheese. Instead, they should throw it away or return it to the store where it was bought. Anyone who suspects they have fallen ill after eating the product should contact a healthcare provider immediately.

Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria involved in this recall, does not always change the look, smell, or taste of food but can still cause serious illness. Symptoms to watch for include nausea, vomiting, persistent fever, muscle pain, severe headaches, and neck stiffness.

Certain groups are more at risk from Listeria infection. Pregnant people, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems should be especially careful. Pregnant women may experience only mild flu-like symptoms, but the infection can cause premature birth, infection of the newborn, or stillbirth.

The CFIA is responsible for protecting public health through food safety measures. This recall is a precaution to prevent the spread of Listeria and protect consumers.

Consumers should not consume or use the affected Mount Becher Buffalo Medium Cheese from batch 854 179. They should safely dispose of the product or return it to the place of purchase.

If you experience symptoms such as vomiting, fever, muscle aches, or neck stiffness after eating this cheese, seek medical attention immediately. Pregnant individuals should be especially vigilant and consult a healthcare provider if symptoms appear.

Food safety is important because harmful bacteria like Listeria can be present even when food looks and smells fine. Acting quickly can prevent serious health problems.
