Courtenay emergency crews responded to two motor vehicle accidents Friday afternoon, causing traffic disruptions and one hospitalization.
The first incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Comox Road. Courtenay Fire, BC Ambulance, and RCMP were on the scene quickly. Witnesses reported a vehicle went airborne over a ditch near a used car lot and landed upside down on multiple parked vehicles.
One person was immediately taken to the hospital, while another remained trapped in the vehicle and was being extricated by emergency services. BC Ambulance confirmed that one patient was transported to a site for helicopter extraction.
As of 3:30 p.m., authorities closed the 17 Street Bridge. Island Highway 19A was also shut between 17th Street and Ryan Road. The Comox Valley RCMP advised motorists to avoid the area and suggested alternative routes including Veteran’s Memorial, Headquarters, and Piercy roads.
Just before 3 p.m., crews attended a separate motor vehicle incident at the corner of 6th Street and Cliffe Avenue. Two vehicles were involved. Courtenay Fire, RCMP, and BC Emergency Health Services responded. The incident was cleared by 3:30 p.m., and traffic returned to normal.
Both incidents caused temporary road closures, traffic detours, and delays in the area. Authorities urged drivers to remain cautious, follow official detour routes, and allow extra travel time. Emergency services highlighted the importance of staying clear of accident scenes. Prompt reporting and cooperation with responders help minimize risks and speed up assistance for those injured.
Local residents expressed concern over the severity of the first incident. Witnesses described the airborne vehicle landing on parked cars as shocking. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of both crashes. Officials have not released details about the condition of those involved, but hospital transport and emergency interventions indicate serious injuries.
RCMP and fire officials are investigating the Comox Road incident. They are reviewing witness statements, CCTV footage, and vehicle conditions to determine the cause. The second crash at Cliffe Avenue appeared less severe, and no injuries were reported beyond minor medical assessment. Motorists are reminded to follow posted detours and to stay alert in areas with high traffic or construction, especially during emergency response situations.
