Police are asking the public for help after a tragic drowning at Kamloops Lake, British Columbia, claimed the life of an international student last weekend. The young man, who was studying at Thompson University, lost his life while swimming near Bruker Marina on the evening of August 23.

Authorities reported that the incident took place just after 5 p.m. when officers received a call about a swimmer in distress. Despite quick actions from people nearby, the student disappeared into the water and did not resurface. Emergency crews responded immediately in an effort to find the swimmer. Tobiano Fire Rescue, Kamloops Fire Rescue, Kamloops Search and Rescue, and the B.C. Conservation Service all joined in the search that evening, but their attempts were not successful.

The RCMP dive team was brought in later to assist. After an extended search effort, the body was recovered the following day, bringing a sad close to the community’s attempts to save the student. Police later confirmed that the victim was an international student at Thompson University. Officers are now working with the coroner’s service to investigate the circumstances of the drowning. Out of respect for the family, the name of the student has not been released.

Cpl. Dana Napier of the Kamloops RCMP explained that multiple rescue teams did everything possible but were unable to reach the swimmer in time. The case remains under active investigation as officials gather more information. Police are urging anyone who was near Bruker Marina on August 23 to come forward with details that might help explain what happened. People who witnessed the swimmer in distress or noticed anything unusual are asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP detachment at 250-828-3000 and quote file number 2025-27751.

The incident has left the local community and Thompson University students in shock. For many international students, living in a new country comes with challenges, and the sudden loss of a classmate has brought deep sadness. While the student’s identity has not been made public, the news has been met with sympathy across the campus and among local residents, who have expressed support for the grieving family.

Kamloops Lake is a well-known recreation spot, visited each summer by swimmers, families, and boaters. However, sudden drops in depth, shifting currents, and cold water temperatures can create dangerous conditions. Authorities regularly advise swimmers to take safety measures, including staying within marked areas, wearing flotation devices, and avoiding swimming alone. For international visitors who may not be familiar with Canadian lakes, the risks can be even greater.

The tragic drowning underscores the need for caution in open water and highlights the importance of community support during times of loss. Police and the coroner continue their investigation while hoping that more witnesses will come forward. Even small details could help provide answers for the family and friends who are now mourning. Local residents and university staff are expected to offer support to the student community as they come together to honor the young man’s life.

Authorities continue to stress that public assistance is essential. Anyone with information, no matter how minor it may seem, is encouraged to speak with police. The incident serves as a difficult reminder of the risks of open water swimming and the importance of vigilance when enjoying natural lakes like Kamloops.
