Oak Bay will come alive with music and art this August as 16-year-old folk singer Malakai performs a free outdoor concert in Estevan Village.

The event takes place on Sunday, August 17, from 1 to 2 p.m. and is open to everyone. Malakai, a rising star from Quw’utsun territory, brings his heartfelt music to the stage with a special pop-up performance in the heart of the village.

Malakai recently returned from Montreal, where he performed at four private showcases during the Folk Alliance International Conference. This major event is known for featuring new talent from around the world. Malakai’s showcases earned praise from many in the music industry, including legendary singer James Taylor, who described the teen’s work as “brilliant.”

Earlier this year, Malakai also released his debut EP titled Malakai: Live at the Duncan Showroom. The recording captures the emotion and energy of his live shows, and fans across the Island have been celebrating his growing success.

At the Oak Bay concert, Malakai will play on one of the city’s hand-painted public pianos. These colorful instruments are part of a local art project that brings music and art together in public spaces. The piano Malakai will use features artwork by two Oak Bay artists—Jennifer McIntyre and Flo-Elle Watson—who painted the panels with detailed, nature-inspired designs.

The concert is free to attend and does not require tickets. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and umbrellas for comfort, as seating will not be provided. While the concert is expected to go on rain or shine, it may be rescheduled if there is heavy rain.

This event offers a unique chance to enjoy live music, support young talent, and experience local art—all in a friendly outdoor setting. Organizers hope the concert will draw people of all ages to connect through music and creativity.

The Estevan Village area is known for its cozy cafes, small shops, and relaxed vibe. With Malakai’s live music filling the air, it promises to be a special afternoon for locals and visitors alike.

Oak Bay continues to support local musicians and artists with free public events like this. The concert is part of a wider push to make the arts more accessible to the community.

If you’re looking for a fun and free way to spend a summer afternoon, head to Estevan Village on August 17. With Malakai’s soulful folk songs and the charm of Oak Bay, it’s sure to be a memorable experience.
