A Parksville truck fire temporarily closed the Island Highway on August 13, halting traffic near Exit 46. Emergency crews responded quickly to a diesel-powered pickup truck engulfed in flames about 200 metres north of the overpass.

Fire Chief Marc Norris said the incident began when the truck stalled and would not restart. Smoke emerged from the engine compartment, prompting the driver and two passengers to exit safely. “The three occupants got out and removed their belongings. Soon after, the engine and then the passenger compartment were fully engulfed in flames,” Norris said.

No injuries were reported, and all vehicle occupants were unharmed. The fire prompted immediate action from Parksville Fire Rescue, who closed the northbound lanes and the on-ramp to contain the scene and ensure safety.

Firefighters worked efficiently to extinguish the flames, reopening the passing lane once the fire was under control. They remained at the site until the truck and any debris were cleared from the road. Mainroad personnel also attended to evaluate the highway and manage traffic flow after the incident.

Parksville Fire Rescue deployed a comprehensive response team, including one command vehicle, one engine, two water tenders, a ladder truck, and 14 personnel. Two water tenders provided the primary water supply, while additional support came from a tanker operated by the Errington Volunteer Fire Department.

The fire highlights the dangers of vehicle malfunctions and the importance of rapid emergency response. Diesel engines can produce intense flames once a fire ignites, but prompt evacuation and professional firefighting measures prevented injuries.

Traffic disruptions lasted for a short period, but the quick efforts of firefighters ensured the highway reopened safely. Emergency teams emphasize that drivers should remain alert for stalled vehicles and report any smoke or fire immediately to avoid escalation.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the stall that led to the blaze. Residents and commuters are reminded to maintain safe distances from emergency scenes and follow traffic control instructions.

Parksville Fire Rescue praised the coordinated effort between local and volunteer teams, noting that collaboration allowed the fire to be contained swiftly and safely.

This Parksville truck fire incident serves as a reminder of the vital role of emergency services and the importance of vehicle maintenance to prevent similar situations.
