A Vancouver man was arrested twice in one day in Port Moody, first for public disturbance and later for impaired driving after speeding at nearly two and a half times the limit.

Police responded to a call at around 1:45 a.m. on Sunday in the Moody Centre area. The disturbance happened as a wedding was ending. According to police, Good Samaritans had taken car keys from the intoxicated man when he said he planned to drive home. After losing his keys, the man grew upset and started causing a scene, leading to the police being called.

Officers arrived and arrested the man for breach of peace as a preventive action. They then took him back to his home in Vancouver. Police told him he should wait until sober before getting his vehicle later.

A few hours later, at about 3:50 a.m., officers saw a car speeding near the Port Moody police station on St. Johns Street. The speed limit there is 50 km/h, but the car was traveling at 123 km/h. Police stopped the vehicle and found the driver was the same man they had taken home earlier.

The man, 29 years old, admitted to officers that he had used a ride-share service to return to Port Moody so he could drive his car home.

He was arrested again, this time for impaired driving, and held in custody until sober. He now faces charges under the Motor Vehicle Act. His driver’s license will be suspended, and his vehicle impounded. Police have also filed a high-risk driving report with Road Safety B.C.
