A new Save-On Foods grocery store is coming soon to Port Moody, British Columbia. The company is opening a small-format outlet at 221 Ioco Road, marking its return to the area after several decades.

The store will take over the location of the current Meiga Supermarket. That store is expected to close by the end of August. The change in tenancy follows business decisions made by Georgia Main Food Group, the parent company of Meiga Supermarket.

The upcoming Save-On store will be about 13,000 square feet. This is much smaller than the typical full-sized Save-On Foods outlets seen in other parts of the province. The smaller size reflects a shift in retail trends toward compact, community-focused grocery shopping.

Pattison Food Group, which owns Save-On Foods, confirmed the store’s opening plans earlier this week. The company aims to provide a convenient and well-stocked grocery option for residents of Port Moody.

Save-On Foods has a long history in the region. Although it has not operated a store in Port Moody in recent years, it did have a presence in the 1980s under the Mark-It Foods brand. This new store represents the company’s renewed interest in serving the Port Moody community.

The decision to open a smaller store comes at a time when many grocery chains are rethinking store formats. With rising real estate costs and changes in consumer habits, small-format stores are becoming more common. They offer many of the same products found in larger stores but in a space that is easier to navigate and manage.

Residents in the area can expect the new store to offer fresh produce, baked goods, meat, dairy, and other everyday essentials. The compact format means it may not carry every item found in a larger location, but it will still focus on quality and convenience.

Palle Knudsen, vice-president of retail operations at Georgia Main Food Group, said the decision to close Meiga Supermarket was based on several business factors. Though no further details were shared, it is common for companies to adjust locations based on customer needs, lease terms, and market changes.

Construction and setup are expected to begin shortly after Meiga Supermarket shuts its doors. Save-On Foods aims to complete the renovation quickly to meet its goal of opening by mid-September.

The new store is expected to create several local jobs and provide a fresh shopping option for nearby residents. It also strengthens the company’s presence in the Vancouver area, where it already operates multiple successful locations.

Save-On Foods continues to evolve its business model to meet modern demands. With online ordering, local delivery, and community programs, the company is focused on staying competitive in a changing retail market.

By choosing Port Moody for its next location, Save-On is responding to the area’s growth and the needs of local families. The store’s opening is likely to draw both loyal customers and new shoppers looking for a trusted grocery brand.

With the September launch date fast approaching, local residents can look forward to more shopping options close to home. As the retail landscape changes, Save-On’s move signals confidence in smaller stores and community-centered service.
