Port Moody commuters faced delays Tuesday morning after a West Coast Express train collided with a vehicle at a local crossing. The incident forced the temporary halt or cancellation of westbound trains.

The crash occurred just before 7:30 a.m. at the Reed Point Marina crossing. Authorities reported that the driver of a pickup truck failed to yield and was struck by the train.

The impact sent the pickup truck across the crossing, leaving the driver with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders quickly transported the individual to a nearby hospital for treatment.

At the time of the collision, the West Coast Express train was carrying commuters. Train service was paused for roughly an hour while police and paramedics attended to the scene.

Two westbound trains were affected, including the 6:55 a.m. train departing Mission City Station and the 7:25 a.m. train, which is the last westbound service during the morning commute.

The West Coast Express runs five trains from Mission City Station to Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver each weekday morning. Commuters on Tuesday morning had to adjust travel plans due to the sudden interruption in service.

Authorities are investigating the collision to determine the exact circumstances leading to the incident. They emphasized the importance of obeying all railway crossing signals to prevent future accidents.

The West Coast Express has a strong safety record, but collisions at crossings remain a risk when vehicles fail to yield. Transit officials are reminding drivers and pedestrians to stay alert near railway tracks.

Commuters expressed frustration at the delays but acknowledged the quick response by police and paramedics helped ensure the injured driver received timely care.

Service resumed gradually after the scene was cleared, though some trains continued to operate on a modified schedule throughout the morning. Passengers are encouraged to check the West Coast Express website or transit updates for current schedules.

Railway crossings in Port Moody, including Reed Point Marina, have seen safety improvements in recent years. However, incidents like this highlight the need for continued caution and adherence to signals.

Officials reiterated that West Coast Express trains cannot stop quickly when a vehicle is on the tracks. Drivers are urged to follow posted signage and signals to prevent accidents.

The collision serves as a reminder of the risks at railway crossings and the importance of vigilance from both drivers and train operators.
