A B.C. ferry crash caused delays on the Sunshine Coast on Friday after a Dodge pickup truck collided with a ramp on the Malaspina Sky in Powell River. Authorities confirmed that the vehicle’s brakes failed, leading to significant damage but no injuries.

The incident occurred at around 7:30 a.m. during the loading process. Police said the Dodge pickup struck the galley ramp while attempting to board the ferry. The crash heavily damaged the truck and forced ferry operators to delay multiple sailings.

RCMP Cpl. Alex Bérubé stated that initial evidence points to a “malfunctioning brake system” as the cause of the crash. The 66-year-old driver of the Dodge was issued a ticket for improper brake performance, which carries a $552 fine.

“Fortunately, nobody was hurt in this incident,” Bérubé said. Officials quickly moved to remove the vehicle from the ferry and conducted inspections to ensure the vessel remained safe and structurally sound.

The Malaspina Sky experienced disruptions for several trips while crews cleared the damaged truck and checked for potential structural damage to the ramp and surrounding areas. Passengers reported delays, but no further issues were reported during the ferry’s later sailings.

RCMP is seeking information from the public to aid their investigation. Anyone with details about the incident is asked to contact Powell River RCMP at 604-485-6255.

Authorities emphasized that ferry safety procedures worked as intended and that crew members followed emergency protocols during the incident. The quick response prevented injuries and ensured the vessel remained operational after inspections.

The incident highlights the importance of vehicle maintenance, particularly braking systems, for drivers boarding ferries. Improperly functioning brakes can create safety risks not only for passengers but also for ferry staff and other vehicles.

Ferry operators confirmed that inspections of both the ramp and the Malaspina Sky were completed before resuming normal service. All future sailings were reported to be on schedule, and safety measures have been reinforced for vehicle loading.

This B.C. ferry crash is a reminder for drivers to regularly check their vehicles’ brake systems, especially when driving onto large vessels. Authorities continue to investigate, but early reports confirm that proper safety protocols on the ferry prevented any harm.

No further details about the truck’s mechanical condition have been released, but officials are reviewing the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Passengers who experienced delays expressed relief that the crash did not result in injuries.

The Malaspina Sky remains a vital transportation link for Powell River and surrounding communities, and ferry operators reaffirmed their commitment to safety following the crash.
