A Vernon caregiver is seeking support after a devastating house fire destroyed her home. Candace Fijnvandraat lost everything on August 7, leaving her in urgent need of help from her community.
Fijnvandraat was on her way to a movie when a neighbour called to alert her about flames engulfing her home at the Sandy Beach Trailer Court near Kin Beach. Her sister, Christina Blackstock, described the loss as “pretty devastating,” emphasizing that Fijnvandraat, a dedicated caregiver, now needs care herself.
“She works hard, she’s always caring for others,” Blackstock said. “Now it’s time for her to receive help.”
In response, Blackstock launched a GoFundMe campaign to support her sister’s recovery. As of Wednesday evening, the fundraiser has raised $350 toward its $7,000 goal.
Vernon Fire Rescue Service Deputy Chief Alan Hofsink reported that night crews arrived to find a fire in the back of the home. Firefighters contained and extinguished the blaze, completing an investigation before returning the property to the owner. Despite this, Blackstock said Fijnvandraat will not be able to move back into the home.
“Candace raised her three children on her own, and they are now adults,” Blackstock explained. “She was living alone, and now everything is gone—family heirlooms, childhood memories, all of it.”
Restoration teams are attempting to salvage what they can from the damaged home, but much of Fijnvandraat’s possessions are likely lost. Insurance may help cover some of the damage, but Blackstock noted the process will take time to sort out.
Adding to the challenge, Fijnvandraat has a cat that may need temporary care until she can secure new housing.
The family hopes the community will rally to support Fijnvandraat in rebuilding her life. Donations through the GoFundMe will help her cover immediate needs and start the recovery process.
Blackstock emphasized the emotional impact of the fire, saying it’s not just a home that was lost but also decades of memories and personal treasures. She urged others to contribute so her sister can regain stability after this unexpected tragedy.
As a caregiver herself, Fijnvandraat has spent years helping others, and now her family and community are stepping in to care for her. The family’s message is clear: any support will make a significant difference as she begins to rebuild her life after the fire.
For those who wish to help, donations can be made through the GoFundMe campaign, ensuring Fijnvandraat and her cat have immediate assistance and a path forward toward recovery.
