A hunter miraculously survived after tumbling 90 metres down a steep mountainous trail near Prince Rupert, British Columbia. Rescue crews described the incident as a serious but survivable accident, crediting both preparation and quick response for saving his life.
The incident occurred on August 2 near Lachmach Lake, roughly 50 kilometres by road from Prince Rupert. Authorities received a report about two goat hunters in distress, prompting a search and rescue operation in the challenging terrain.
Jordy Bouillet, president of the Prince Rupert Ground Search and Rescue team, said the hunter suffered multiple fractures to his lower limbs after falling down a rocky 65-degree slope. He described the injuries as “substantial lower limb injuries,” noting that the terrain was exceptionally dangerous.
“The slope is very steep, and the trails are narrow and rocky,” Bouillet explained. “It had just rained recently, and the rocks were covered with slippery lichen. It’s surprising he survived that fall.”
The area near Lachmach Lake is known for its rugged peaks and limited hiking paths. Bouillet highlighted that the hunters were fortunate to have proper equipment and training. Both were carrying a personal transmission device, which allowed them to send their coordinates to the search team.
“This device made all the difference. Without it, finding them would have been extremely difficult,” Bouillet said. “These hunters did everything right.”
Crews deployed quickly, navigating the narrow trails and steep cliffs to reach the injured man. Once located, he was airlifted to safety by helicopter. Bouillet praised the hunters’ preparedness, which likely prevented a far worse outcome.
The incident underscores the risks involved in mountain hunting, especially in remote areas with unstable terrain. Search and rescue experts remind outdoor enthusiasts to carry proper communication devices, wear sturdy footwear, and travel with partners.
“Even experienced hunters face dangers like sudden falls, slippery rocks, and difficult terrain,” Bouillet noted. “Preparation and safety equipment can save lives in these situations.”
The surviving hunter is now receiving medical care for his leg fractures. Authorities say that with proper treatment and rehabilitation, he is expected to recover. The other hunter, who remained uninjured, assisted in alerting the rescue team.
Mountainous regions around Prince Rupert are popular with hunters seeking goats and other wildlife. However, the combination of steep slopes, wet rocks, and narrow trails creates a high-risk environment.
