A 26-year-old mother and her 5-month-old child died near Comox Lake on Thursday when a tree unexpectedly fell on them, officials confirmed. Authorities are calling it a tragic accident.

Comox Valley RCMP, BC Emergency Health Services, and the Cumberland Fire Department quickly responded to the scene at 1:44 p.m. Despite immediate aid, the mother was pronounced dead at the site. Her infant was rushed to hospital but later died.

Police have stated there is no evidence of criminal activity. The BC Coroners Service has begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths to understand how the accident occurred.

RCMP emphasized that no further details would be released at this time to respect the family’s privacy. Officers offered their condolences to friends, relatives, and the community affected by the tragedy.

Eyewitnesses at the scene tried to help the mother and child before emergency teams arrived. Authorities acknowledged their efforts, describing the situation as heartbreaking.

Officials noted that Comox Lake, known for its natural beauty and hiking areas, can be dangerous during storms or high winds when falling trees pose a risk. Residents are urged to remain cautious in forested areas and report any unstable trees near walking paths or campsites.

The incident has prompted local authorities to review safety measures in outdoor recreational areas. Signs warning of falling trees and periodic inspections may be increased to prevent future accidents.

Community members have expressed shock and grief over the sudden loss. Local social media posts show neighbors and visitors sharing memories and condolences for the mother and her child.

First responders said the conditions were challenging. Emergency teams had to navigate difficult terrain to reach the victims, highlighting the risks faced by both visitors and rescue personnel in remote forested locations.

This tragedy comes as a reminder of the unpredictable dangers in natural settings. While Comox Lake attracts visitors for its scenic views, authorities stress vigilance, especially during high winds, storms, or after heavy rain.

The RCMP reiterated that they are committed to supporting the family and community through this difficult time. Mental health resources and support services have been offered to those impacted, including bystanders who witnessed the accident.

BC Emergency Health Services and Cumberland Fire Department said their teams responded as quickly as possible, coordinating efforts to provide immediate care. Despite their fast response, the severity of the accident left little chance for survival.

Authorities continue to monitor the area to ensure safety for others. Visitors are reminded to follow posted warnings and exercise caution in forested areas.

The BC Coroners Service is expected to release more information once the investigation concludes. In the meantime, RCMP ask the public to respect the family’s privacy during their time of mourning.

Local leaders have urged the public to support one another and take care when spending time outdoors, especially in areas with known hazards such as falling trees.

The loss of the mother and infant has deeply affected the community. Officials say they are focusing on both safety awareness and providing care to those grieving in the wake of the accident.
