The BC Wildfire Service is responding to an out-of-control wildfire near Comox Lake, reported during the afternoon of July 21. The fire is located on the Courtenay side of the lake, near the Comox Dam Recreational Area, and a plume of smoke is visible from parts of the Comox Valley looking west.

The wildfire has been measured at approximately one hectare. BC Wildfire Service has dispatched four initial attack crews, two helicopters, and two officers to the scene. Air tankers have also been launched to assist in containing the blaze.

The fire is classified as a Rank-2 wildfire, meaning it is a ground fire with open flame. While there are recreational structures and a campground nearby, the wildfire service says there is no immediate threat to buildings or critical infrastructure.

An out-of-control wildfire is defined as a fire that is spreading or is expected to spread beyond its current perimeter or control lines. BC Wildfire Service is closely monitoring the situation and is working to contain the fire as quickly as possible.

Residents and visitors in the area are advised to remain alert to updates, follow any guidance from emergency officials, and avoid the vicinity of the fire. The story will be updated as more information becomes available.
