Comox Valley soccer player Liam Mackenzie has reached a major milestone in his career by signing his first MLS contract with Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The young midfielder, who is only 18 years old, will remain with the team through 2028 under the Homegrown Player rule, with an option for 2029. The signing is a personal dream come true for Mackenzie, who grew up in British Columbia and worked his way through the Whitecaps academy system before earning a place in the senior squad.

The Homegrown Player rule in Major League Soccer allows teams to sign local academy players directly to their first-team roster. It has been an important pathway for developing Canadian talent, and Mackenzie’s journey shows how the system continues to help young athletes make the jump from youth soccer to the professional stage. His signing is also a point of pride for his hometown in the Comox Valley, where his progress has been followed closely.

Mackenzie joined the Whitecaps FC BMO Academy in 2020 as a 13-year-old. Over the past five years, he has shown steady growth, standing out for his skill, maturity, and determination. He later played with Whitecaps FC 2, the club’s development side, where he gained valuable playing time and experience against older and more experienced opponents. His consistent performances helped him move up the ranks, while his dedication and work ethic earned him the trust of coaches and teammates alike.

Earlier this year, Mackenzie trained with the Whitecaps first team during their preseason camp in Marbella, Spain. His ability to compete at a higher level caught the attention of the coaching staff, and when the opportunity came in March, he was ready. On March 22, he made his official MLS debut at BC Place against Chicago Fire FC. Starting the match, he immediately left his mark by recording an assist, a moment that showed he was prepared for the challenge.

The Whitecaps organization has praised Mackenzie for his progress and potential. Sporting director Axel Schuster described him as a player with a strong mentality, who adapts quickly and works hard at every level he has reached. The club views him as a key part of their future plans, and his signing reflects their long-term commitment to building with young Canadian talent. Mackenzie now joins a growing list of players from British Columbia who have moved from the academy to the first team, a clear sign that the pathway is working.

For Mackenzie, signing this contract is more than just a professional step. It carries deep personal meaning. He has spoken about how much the club has meant to him growing up and how special it is to now wear the jersey at the highest level. He expressed gratitude to his family, coaches, teammates, and friends who have supported him from the very start. In his words, this is only the beginning of what he hopes will be a long and successful journey with the team.

Mackenzie has also gained valuable experience beyond club soccer. He has represented Canada at the U-17 level, where he faced international competition that tested and strengthened his game. This exposure has helped him adapt to different styles of play and given him confidence as he moves forward in his career.

At just 18, Mackenzie’s professional path is only starting. His contract provides stability and the chance to grow within a supportive club environment. With opportunities to learn from experienced teammates and coaches, he has the tools to keep developing and to become a regular contributor in MLS. Fans in Comox Valley and across British Columbia will be watching his progress closely, as he carries the hopes of many young players who dream of reaching the same stage.

With his first professional deal secured, his debut already made, and his potential still unfolding, Comox Valley soccer player Liam Mackenzie now has the opportunity to build a bright future with Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
