A man has been arrested after allegedly setting fire to the Northern Rockies RCMP detachment in Fort Nelson, British Columbia.

The incident occurred Thursday when a “considerable amount of smoke” from the fire entered the building through its air intake, prompting a temporary evacuation. Police confirmed that the fire was set on the building’s exterior. While some damage occurred, authorities noted the situation could have been far worse if it had not happened during business hours with staff present.

Witnesses reported seeing a man start the fire. Investigators obtained a photograph of the suspect fleeing the scene, which allowed officers to identify and arrest him after a short foot pursuit. The suspect may now face multiple charges related to the incident.

No injuries were reported, and authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full circumstances of the fire. Police emphasized that rapid response and eyewitness information played a key role in quickly apprehending the suspect.

The RCMP has not released the identity of the suspect but confirmed that safety protocols were followed during the evacuation, ensuring no staff were harmed. Authorities also praised the swift actions of personnel on duty for minimizing potential damage and preventing injury.

This incident highlights the ongoing importance of vigilance and quick reporting in emergency situations. Residents are reminded to report suspicious activity immediately, as timely information can prevent escalation and assist law enforcement in apprehending suspects.

Investigators continue to review the scene and gather evidence to support charges. The Northern Rockies detachment remains operational while repairs are assessed and completed.

The Fort Nelson RCMP fire serves as a reminder of the risks associated with arson and the critical role of community cooperation in keeping public facilities safe. Authorities continue to encourage residents and witnesses to provide any information that could aid the investigation.
