A 74-year-old woman from Agassiz has died in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 1 near Chilliwack, B.C. Police confirmed the crash happened on Sunday afternoon and forced the closure of the busy highway for much of the day.

According to investigators, the accident took place at about 12:50 p.m. The woman was driving a grey Ford Focus eastbound as it approached Prest Road. For reasons still under review, the car left the highway and rolled into a ditch. The woman, who was the only person inside the car, did not survive.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but she was pronounced dead on site. Police said there was no sign of another vehicle being involved. Authorities explained that at this stage of the inquiry there is no sign of criminal activity. Early evidence suggests the crash may have been the result of a loss of control, but the full cause remains under investigation.

The crash forced the closure of Highway 1 in both directions near the crash site. Traffic was backed up for several kilometres as drivers were redirected to side routes. Crews stayed at the site for several hours as officers collected evidence and worked to understand what happened. The highway reopened shortly before 9 p.m., about eight hours after the incident. Officials thanked drivers for their patience while the road was closed.

Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with the local highway patrol said that officers are now focused on gathering information from witnesses, reviewing vehicle data, and checking road conditions. He also explained that investigators are trying to determine if factors such as speed, a medical event, or a mechanical issue could have played a role. Authorities have asked anyone who was driving in the area at the time of the crash to come forward if they saw the car before the incident or captured it on dash camera footage. This could help provide more clarity about how the vehicle left the road.

The woman’s death has left a deep mark on her hometown of Agassiz. While police have not released her name, they confirmed that her family has been notified. Local residents have expressed sadness over the tragedy and concern about safety on the highway stretch near Prest Road. Highway 1 is a key route through the Fraser Valley and is often busy with both commuter and commercial traffic. The section near Chilliwack has seen crashes in the past, and authorities continue to remind drivers to use extra caution, especially when conditions change.

Police are urging the public to take road safety seriously and to be alert while driving. They stress the importance of staying within speed limits, wearing seatbelts, and avoiding distractions. Investigators said even a brief moment of inattention can have tragic results. Motorists are also advised to ensure their vehicles are well maintained, with brakes, tires, and steering systems checked regularly. These steps can reduce the chances of accidents caused by mechanical failures.

The investigation into the Highway 1 crash is still ongoing. Once complete, police may release further details about what led to the tragedy. For now, officials say their priority is to support the woman’s family and ensure that the public remains aware of the need for road safety. The crash is a reminder of how quickly accidents can happen and how devastating the results can be. Police and safety advocates continue to call for caution, patience, and focus on the road at all times.
