George Chow, a respected and experienced public leader, has been appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary for the Downtown Eastside and Chinatown in July 2025. With a deep connection to the area and years of political service, Chow is expected to bring meaningful change to two of Vancouver’s most historic and challenged neighborhoods.
Chow has represented Vancouver-Fraserview as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) since 2017. He was re-elected in 2020 and again in 2024. Before joining the provincial legislature, he served as a city councillor in Vancouver for two consecutive terms from 2005 to 2011. His long record in public office reflects his dedication to local communities and his ability to work across different levels of government.
His current role focuses on supporting communities in the Downtown Eastside and revitalizing Vancouver’s historic Chinatown. These neighborhoods face complex challenges including housing, addiction, and economic pressures. Chow brings a personal understanding of these issues, having grown up in the Downtown Eastside after immigrating to Canada in 1965.
Chow’s appointment follows his past roles as Minister of Citizens’ Services and Minister of State for Trade. In these roles, he championed digital accessibility, trade partnerships, and cultural initiatives. One of his key achievements includes supporting the creation of Canada’s first Chinese Canadian Museum. This museum helps preserve the stories and contributions of Chinese Canadians and promotes education and awareness of their history.
Born in China, Chow spent his early years in Hong Kong before moving to Vancouver with his family. He attended local schools, including Britannia and Gladstone secondary schools, before graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1975. He then spent three decades working for BC Hydro, focusing on power generation. His professional career earned him recognition from the engineering community, including a fellowship with Engineers Canada and membership with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC.
Beyond his official roles, Chow has always remained active in the community. Over the years, he volunteered with several important local organizations. These include the Vancouver Public Library Board, the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Vancouver, the Urban Spirit Foundation, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC. He also worked with family associations and groups such as the Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver and the Vancouver Chinatown Merchants Association.
Chow’s ongoing work in the Downtown Eastside and Chinatown builds on his lifelong commitment to community service. His leadership combines personal history with professional expertise, offering a strong foundation for renewing neighborhoods that are rich in culture and tradition but facing real challenges.
