The Langley Thunder junior A lacrosse program is celebrating after three of its standout players were recognized as some of the best in British Columbia this season. The provincial awards highlighted both the experience of a graduating star and the promise of rising talents, showcasing the strength of the Thunder organization.
Cody Malawsky, a veteran forward from Maple Ridge, closed his junior career in style. He won the John Urban Award, which is given to the league’s top graduating player. He was also named to the first-team all-star lineup. Malawsky became one of the most respected names in the BC Junior A Lacrosse League, not only for his skill but also for his leadership and commitment to the game.
Over five seasons, he left his mark on the league with remarkable numbers. He scored 78 goals and recorded 171 points in 46 regular season games. His playoff record was equally impressive, adding 62 goals and 144 points in 38 contests. Playing for both Langley and Coquitlam during his career, Malawsky built a reputation as a consistent offensive force and a role model for younger players.
The Thunder organization praised his contribution, saying he set the standard for what it means to wear the team’s jersey. His legacy, they noted, goes beyond statistics, as he became a key figure in shaping the culture of the program.
In the crease, goaltender Caleb Khan earned a spot on the second-team all-star roster. His breakout season saw him post a goals-against average of 9.37 and a save percentage of .819. These numbers reflected his steady presence in net and his ability to give his team a chance in every game.
Khan still has three years of junior eligibility ahead of him, making his recognition even more noteworthy. The Thunder view him as one of the most promising young goaltenders in the league and a vital part of the team’s future. His progress this season showed not only raw talent but also the focus and determination needed to succeed at the highest junior level.
Adding to the team’s achievements, rookie defender and transition player Koji Okuyama was named to the all-rookie all-star team. In his debut campaign, he played 15 games, scoring nine goals and contributing 13 points. His performance demonstrated versatility, strong defensive instincts, and the ability to contribute in transition play. Okuyama’s success points to the depth of young talent developing within the Thunder ranks.
The team expressed pride in all three players following the announcement of the provincial awards. They highlighted Malawsky’s influence as a leader and role model, while also pointing to the bright future represented by Khan and Okuyama. The recognition, they said, reflects both the tradition of excellence and the ongoing development within the organization.
The Langley Thunder program is one of the cornerstones of lacrosse in British Columbia. The club operates senior A, junior A, and junior tier 1 teams. Each squad competes in its respective league, with home games played at the Langley Events Centre. Over the years, the organization has become known for producing competitive teams and developing players who go on to excel at higher levels of the sport.
This year’s awards are a reminder of the program’s strength. From a graduating star leaving behind a legacy, to a young goaltender making his mark, and a rookie defender stepping confidently onto the stage, the Thunder’s mix of experience and emerging talent signals a promising future. As the organization looks ahead, the recognition of these three players underlines the continued growth of lacrosse in the region and the central role of the Thunder in that story.
