Langley United has made a stunning debut in the League1 BC soccer league by winning the championship in their first season. The team defeated Vancouver Whitecaps Academy 3-2 in a thrilling final match on July 26 at UBC Thunderbird Stadium.
The win was sealed with a dramatic penalty goal by Amir Mahdi Ghasemi in the 95th minute. Ghasemi’s goal came with the final kick of the game, setting off celebrations among players and fans. Brody Thomas and Axl de Vries also scored for Langley, helping the team secure their historic victory.
The pressure was high heading into the final. It was a must-win game, and Langley delivered with determination and focus.
Mike Thompson, the club’s general manager, described the game as “heart-pounding.” He praised the team’s commitment and ability to perform under pressure.
Langley finished at the top of the nine-team league standings, with a strong record of 10 wins, three losses, and three ties.
Head coach Azad Palani said the team always aimed to be competitive from the very start of the season. He called the championship win “a great relief” after an intense few weeks of matches and training.
Mark Parker, Langley United’s Technical Director, said the success shows the strength of the club’s player development system. He explained that the win is the result of years of hard work, strong coaching, and strong community support. Players have grown through the ranks from grassroots soccer to semi-professional play.
Langley’s title win also means they will compete in the next national cup tournament. This is the top club competition in Canadian soccer. It could even set up a local derby with Vancouver FC, which would be a major event for Langley fans.
Coach Palani, who also works as an assistant coach at Vancouver FC, said a local match between the two teams would be a dream scenario.
“A packed Willoughby Stadium for an all-Langley derby would be amazing,” said Palani. “And now, it’s actually possible.”
Palani also credited Langley’s strong season to the close partnership with Vancouver FC. Eleven players from Vancouver FC’s Under-19 academy or first team played with Langley during the season. This was possible thanks to an affiliate agreement between the two clubs.
He explained that both clubs are part of the same development system. Their shared focus is to support players from youth levels all the way to the professional game. The cooperation between Langley United and Vancouver FC has clearly paid off, with both teams benefiting from shared talent and training.
Langley’s big win comes at a time of exciting change for the club. In September, they will move to the new Smith Athletic Park. The move will help the club continue growing and improving. It also sets the stage for Langley United’s 100th anniversary celebration in 2026.
