Richmond’s J.N. Burnett Secondary School was placed on a hold and secure on Wednesday morning after a suspicious item was reported nearby. Richmond RCMP said the measure was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff.
A hold and secure is a safety protocol used when an incident occurs near a school that could pose a risk. David Sadler, spokesperson for the Richmond School District, explained that the precaution keeps students inside while authorities investigate.
Richmond RCMP received a report of a suspicious item in the 5000-block of Granville Avenue around 10:20 a.m. on September 25. Officers from the Richmond RCMP Youth Section responded quickly to secure the area and ensure everyone’s safety.
Cpl. Adriana O’Malley, media liaison for Richmond RCMP, said the hold and secure was implemented “out of an abundance of caution” while the scene was investigated.
The BC RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit was called to examine the item. After assessment, authorities confirmed that it did not pose a threat to the school or surrounding area.
Students and staff remained inside the school during the precautionary measure, and normal activities resumed once the area was deemed safe.
The incident highlights the importance of quick police response and established safety protocols to protect school communities. Richmond RCMP continue to encourage vigilance and prompt reporting of any suspicious items or activities near schools.
