The City of Surrey has introduced a new program that allows residents to borrow sports equipment for free in public parks. This makes Surrey the first city in North America to offer this kind of service.

Through the program, people can access gear like basketballs, soccer balls, table tennis sets, and even fitness tools. The items are available at 30 self-serve stations placed in more than 20 parks throughout the city. Some of the parks include Bear Creek Park, Tamanawis Park, Cloverdale Athletic Park, and South Surrey Athletic Park.

This service is made possible through a partnership with Equip Sport, a Swiss company that runs more than 400 similar stations across Europe. The company has brought its successful model to Canada, and Surrey is the first city to launch it.

The goal of the program is to make sports more accessible to everyone. By removing cost as a barrier, the city hopes more people will take part in physical activity. It also aims to bring the community together through shared use of public spaces.

According to the city, this new approach to public recreation is both inclusive and easy to use. Residents only need a smartphone and a few minutes to get started.

To access the equipment, users need to download the Equip Sport app. Once installed, they can search for the nearest lending station on the map. When they arrive at a station, they can tap the app to unlock the storage unit, take the gear, and start playing.

Although the equipment is free to borrow, the app does require users to enter credit card details. This is only in case the items are lost or damaged. Charges will only apply if equipment is not returned or is returned broken.

This system is designed to build trust while encouraging responsibility. It allows users of all ages to enjoy recreation without having to bring their own gear.

The program also has support from Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. This group helps reduce barriers in sports for young people and families. Their funding helped make the project a reality.

City officials say the project will serve as a model for other cities. In fact, Toronto is already planning to introduce a similar program based on Surrey’s success.

The mayor of Surrey said the project reflects the city’s commitment to accessible and active lifestyles. She noted that not everyone can afford sports gear, and this program ensures that cost won’t hold anyone back.

This move is part of a larger effort to improve access to public amenities and promote health and wellness. It aligns with other city programs that aim to make Surrey a more active and connected community.

With this new service, Surrey has set a high standard for public recreation. The city’s bold move is already getting attention from other areas looking to follow its lead.

The program is expected to grow if it continues to receive strong public support. Officials plan to monitor usage and collect feedback to improve the service over time.

For now, the focus is on raising awareness and getting people to try it. Posters and signs are already up in parks to show how the system works.

Residents who have already used the service say it’s simple, fast, and fun. Some families say they now spend more time outdoors, thanks to the free equipment.

As more people download the app and visit the stations, the city hopes the program will help build stronger ties between neighbors.

In the end, the free sports equipment program is not just about gear. It’s about making sure everyone has a chance to move, play, and connect—no matter their income.

With easy access, simple tools, and a strong support system, Surrey is turning public parks into active, welcoming spaces for all.
