The BC Wildfire Service is actively responding to a wildfire near Comox Lake on the afternoon of July 21. The fire is currently reported on the Courtenay side of the lake, close to the Comox Dam Recreational Area. Smoke from the fire is visible across parts of the Comox Valley, drifting westward.

Officials say the wildfire covers roughly one hectare and is categorized as a Rank-2 fire, which indicates a ground fire with open flames. The service has deployed four initial attack crews, two helicopters, two officers, and air tankers to contain the blaze.

Although recreational structures and a campground are near the fire, BC Wildfire Service confirms there is no immediate danger to homes or essential infrastructure. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as wildfires of this type can spread quickly and unpredictably.

A wildfire is considered out-of-control when it spreads beyond the current perimeter or existing control lines. The BC Wildfire Service emphasizes that conditions remain dynamic and that nearby residents and visitors should stay alert.

Officials advise the public to avoid the affected area. Smoke may affect air quality and visibility in parts of the Comox Valley. Emergency services are ready to respond to any changes in the fire’s behavior.

Firefighting teams are using both ground and air strategies to control the fire. Helicopters are dropping water while crews on the ground work to contain flames and protect nearby structures. Air tankers provide additional support, targeting hotspots and slowing the fire’s spread.

This wildfire highlights ongoing wildfire risks in the region, especially during dry summer months. Residents are reminded to follow local safety guidelines and report any signs of fire promptly.

Updates will be provided as the BC Wildfire Service continues its response and assesses the fire’s progression. Authorities are committed to protecting people, property, and the surrounding environment while keeping the public informed.
